The FSC has a critical consumer protection role since by law it exists for the purpose of protecting the users of financial services.
We at the FSC have observed certain economic trends, consumer behavioural patterns, as well as the threat posed by unregulated financial organizations, all of which serve to convince us that there is a critical need for Jamaica to urgently establish a coordinated and comprehensive mechanism to impart financial education; in other words there is need now for a Jamaican National Financial Literacy Programme (NFLP).
Empowering Jamaicans with the requisite skill through a comprehensive programme of financial education will not be easy but it can provide individuals with the financial knowledge necessary to create household budgets, initiate savings plans, manage debt, and make strategic investment decisions for their retirement or their children’s education.
